Although mixed-race dating wasn"t always acceptable, today many college students are open to the idea of dating someone of a different race or ethnicity. Overall those who are more open to dating someone from a different race or ethnic group are younger and are often more politically liberal and less religious. Shows like scandal and modern family showcase mixed partnerships. This has helped changed attitudes about these relationships. A study exploring hooking up in college found that 69% of college men have engaged in a hookup, 73% of them reporting engaging in penetrative sexual behavior during the hookup. (olmstead, 2013) In 1980 this went up to 1 in 150 new marriages. It increased again in 2010 to 1 in 7 new marriages were between couples of different race or ethnicity. The loosening up of relationship conventions has led to mixed-age marriages as well.
