Stop motion is a form of animation. Lm technique where objects are photographed frame by frame in a series of slightly different positions so that the objects seem to move on their own or come to life. The oldest surviving example of stop motion is a lm fun in a bakery shop. Stop motion was usd in hollywood films such as king kong (1932) and the skeleton. The skeletons were animated by noted special effects pioneer, ray harryhausen, who died earlier this year at the age of 92. This lm was nominated twice for an oscar and won for the best documentary. Relatively recent feature lms such as coraline and kubo and the two strings. Well known animators such as jan svankmajer and the brother quay have used to stop motion in several projects. Last year the museum of modern art in nyc held a retrospective of stephen and timothy quay"s work. Pes is an oscar nominated nyc based animator.
