Religion: a set of beliefs and associated activities designed to facilitate appreciation and understanding of our place in the world. Universality: all cultures have religions ex it serves a basic need. Religious laws/beliefs: governing diet, life, passages, roles of men/women, dress, laws & education. 19th c canada: strong ties b/t religion and higher education. Spread of catholicism (today largest most widespread of world"s religions) Secularism: indifference to or rejection of ideas values in the modern world.
