NATS 1675 Lecture Notes - Male Reproductive System, Seminiferous Tubule, Glans Penis
Document Summary
Three main functions for male reproductive organs: produce and maintain male sex cells (sperm, transport sperm to the outside (to the female"s body, secrete male sex hormones. Components of the male reproductive system: testes (primary sex organs) Form sperm and testosterone: penis, system of ducts. Transportation of sperm and associated fluids: accessory glands. Provide transport medium to help deliver sperm to outside of male"s body. Called gonads (in females, ovaries are gonads) Gland that secretes alkaline mucous-like fluid before ejaculation. Neutralize the urethra from previous acidic urine: seminal vesicle. Aid the movement of sperm: prostate gland. Produce secretions that decrease the acidity of the male and female reproductive environments: vas deferens. Duct that takes sperm from epididymis to urethra: urethra. Urinary and ejaculatory tube: erectile tissue. Fills with blood during arousal: penis. Made of muscle, skin and fibrous tissue. Must be kept at 35oc so testes can produce sperm (carry out spermatogenesis)
