Erection in males and lubrication in females have been reported at infancy. Sexual behaviours motivated by curiosity and exploration rather than sexual desire. Infants thriving on physical contact from caregivers, neglect can shape future development. Between 1 and 2, children notice and become curious about differences between boys and girls (starting as early as 12-15 months) Interest in sex increases around age 10. Most common expression of sexuality is masturbation (higher tendency in males, may be associated with higher testosterone and/or social norms) Some children show decreased interest in body exploration due to earlier negative parental messages and reactions. Sex-segregated activities intense pressure to adopt gender norms of peers. Young girls face increasing sexualization (sexualized media endorsing women as sexual objects: increased levels of depression, anxiety, shame. Period of physical, cognitive, emotional changes: menarche begins for girls, semenarche for boys, secondary sex characteristics develop. Puberty starts at 10-11 for females, 12-13 for boys.
