Document Summary

From 19c into 20c, science appeared to be the dominant way of looking at. New products and methods of communication transformed lives. Challenges were faced though and many came from science itself and they debated questions of knowledge and skepticism. Albert einstein --great deal of influence on nuclear weapons; broke open newtonian physics and gave new answers and the simple observation that time passes faster for someone on a train than someone that is standing still--tremendous for the 20c. Broke down arrogant self assurance of the victorian era and superstition. Ernest rutherford --developed theory of quantum mechanics--piles up more contradictions about what we thought we knew about the world. Kandinsky and duchamp influenced by work on physics; cubism of picasso was influenced by atomic theory. Darwinian thought--let people die bc they are unfit to compete. New developments in anthropology--cultural relativism and franz boaz; no race is superior to another.
