Family: a social unit in which the adult partners or spouses and the children share economic, social and emotional right and responsibilities as well as a sense of commitment or identification with each other. Parents & family play a crucial role in socialization: the process by which parents and others ensure that a child"s standards of behaviour, attitudes, skills and motives conform closely to those deemed appropriate to her role in society. Parents and kids have a mutual influence on each other. Kids also play an active role in their own socialization. Family is interdependent, changes in structure / altered behaviour of one member can affect the fxning of the entire system. Also, families don"t function in isolation: they are influenced by the social, physical, cultural, historical settings they exist in. Family members change all the time, and these changes are reflected in family relationships. The view of the family as an interdependent system that functions as a whole.
