Resilience research: explains positive outcomes among at-risk individuals, things to help buffer from risk: adults, other support systems. Promotive factors: allow positive outcomes to develop despite risk, family, supportive parents, community, church, friends. Resilience in low-income and urban youth: poverty is linked to negative outcomes. How many show resilience: across school/work, pregnancy, externalizing, internalizing, more risk shows higher chances in each category. When putting total risk and total promotive factors together, promotive factors don"t always buffer everything. Risk factors: single parents, lower income, having no health insurance. Implications: in general will have at least one problem, that one problem can be sometimes overwhelming. History teachers play a big role by incorporating things into course materials. Elementary school students: irritable in class, discussing death, increased acting out. Middle schoolers: fear of school violence and war, suspicious of diverse perspectives, withdraw from extracurricular, denial is a form of coping.
