MIMM 214 Lecture 35: Immunotherapy, Immuno-oncology New Beginnings
Document Summary
Just know that there are many ways of making monoclonal antibodies. Different strategies for immunotherapies lead to different outcomes. First column: igg!!! (fc region binds nk cell; nk cell proceeds to kill tumour cell) Cancer cells can hide: express anti-inflammatory effects, or lower their expression of mhci/ii; want to escape, use whatever strategy they can. Monoclonal antibodies are our guided missiles to kill cancer cells; you don"t rely on the immune system (this is direct cancer cell targeting by agent) Or, you press the gas pedal/release the brakes on the host"s immune system using immuno-modulating agents. E. g. bladder cancer, where you put the bacteria there to trigger the immune response; this is sufficient in this cancer. By coupling to ab, you can use much lower doses of toxins to kill same amt of tumour cells. Last column: ab does not target tumor cells; they target t cells. Ctla-4 knockout mice die after 4 weeks; cancer.
