LING 1200 Lecture 2: Lecture 2
Document Summary
The method is too subjective to produce agreement on the elements of sensory experience. Disagreed on what the important elements were (different training) Could not replicate the same results in same experiment. Notice/create understanding on the types of abilities people have in what function those abilities serve. How people behave and think and then figure out what purpose those behaviours and thought processes serve. What people can do, what psychological mechanisms people have and why people need them to function properly in the world. Studied the purpose of memory, emotion, religious experience. The purpose of behaviours and mental processes continues to be emphasized in modern psychological research. People weren"t comfortable with functional approach (never provided strategies for conducting psychological experiments) Like philosophical approach- great ideas about mind and behaviour, but couldn"t experiment. It offered no clear recipe for doing psychological research. Chose conscious experience as major topic of study.
