No social movement is likely to success without substantial resources . Outsiders can be just as important as insiders . Social movements depends on cultural symbols as well as material resources . People must believe they can"t fix their problems on their own . Marxist social movements arise within capitalist societies because capitalism fails to meet the needs of the majority of people . Politics = social institution that distributes power, sets a society"s goals and makes decisions . The state = includes the government as well as the judiciary, government bureaucracies, military and law enforcement . Legitimation = the process of making believable and acceptable to the public, some form of authority . Power = ability to achieve desired ends despite resistance from others . Government = formal organization that directs he political life of a society . Authority = power that people perceive as legitimate rather than coercive .
