Document Summary

The wall of the tubes is one cell layer thick. Carries blood from heart to tissues then back to heart. Has thick walls composed of elastic and muscular fibres (plus supporting tissues) Arteries branch into arterioles (aka small branches of arteries) Gases and small molecules (glucose) exchange across the walls of the capillaries. Sphincter muscles surround the entrance of each capillary. Takes blood from the capillaries to the heart. ^ allows blood to flow only towards the heart when they are open. ^ prevents backwards flow of blood (when they are closed) The tissue forms a pericardium sac (where the heart is located) Epithelial and fibrous tissue called pericardium covers the heart. The right side of the heart pumps blood to the lungs. The left side of the heart pumps blood to the rest of the body. The sides of the heart (left and right) are divided by the septum. The top chamber = the atrium (plural= atria)
