Parents with realistic expectations of prevalence are less likely to have teenaged children who drink. Increases with age: alcohol, marijuana, cigarettes most popular. But also use hallucinogens, prescriptions drugs, inhalants, stimulants. More than grade 7-9 students have drank alcohol in past year. Doubles by grade 10-12: 17% males, 11% females report heavy drinking at least 12 times in past year. Contribute to 16-19 year olds having 3rd highest rate of impaired driving charges of any age group. Youth smoking rate lower than for genera population. Seen as gateway drug not clear if it does lead to consumption of other drugs, but it does usually mean they have used other substances like alcohol, cannabis, or harder drugs. Peer influence affects teen smoking develop mentalists say if pare(cid:374)t"s (cid:272)hildre(cid:374) ha(cid:374)g out with others who smoke, their child probably smokes too. Social pressures increase, rates of eating disorders increase.
