First menstruation and first ejaculation occur around age 13. The growth spurt for boys happen later in puberty but it is more intense and longer lasting. Bones lengthen and become denser, muscles become thicker and denser and body s fat increases and redistributes. Increase preparation for the changes in puberty is associated with better adjustment and more positive perspective. Boys tell fewer people and get less support during this time. Greater mood variation is higher in early adolescence. Less closeness reported by parent and adolescence than at any other time. Early maturing boys are more relaxed, independent, self confident, physically attractive and popular with others, take leadership roles, are athletic and have more psychological stress and problem behaviors. Later maturing boys are anxious, overly talkative, and attention seeking. Early maturing girls are unpopular, withdrawn, lack self-confidence, anxious, prone to depression, take fewer leadership roles, do not do as well in school and have more deviant behavior.
