Common health compromising behaviour (hcb) characteristics: window of vulnerability in adolescence, self-presentation, gradual development, provides some pleasure, common predictive factors, similar profile of substance abuser, socio-economic drivers. When individual persists in use of alcohol or other drugs despite problems related to use of substance, substance dependence may be diagnosed. Compulsive & repetitive use may result in tolerance to effect of drug & withdrawal symptoms when use is reduced or stopped. When use has repeatedly self-administered agent resulting in tolerance, withdrawal, & compulsive behaviour. Substance abuse can include: physical dependence, tolerance, addiction, withdrawal. Harms reduction: approach focusing on risks & consequences of substance use rather than on drug use itself. Implemented through community-based programs: methadone clinics, needle exchange programs. Offers disposable injection kit, sterile tools, medical support.
