Acropolis- the high point of the city. Very important, because it is the seat of political institutions, military positions, etc. it is a place where you want to hold the acropolis. Almost every city has one (sparta being an exception) Good mineral resources: silver, athens coinage, marble (giant building projects) Plentiful literary sources: poetry of solon, herodotus, thucydides, aristotle (4th century) Unlike sparta, they are more aware of their process of formation. Or: gradual synoecism of attica: 9th- 8th centuries, under leadership of athens all one polis, gathering of different clans forming into one. Unlike sparta which has 5 leading cities, athens has only 1 (region of attica) Athens and attica are politically become 1. Eponymous archon: preided over council, assemblu, year named after you, if one was elected to this position (besides all sorts of power), the year would be named after you.
