Marriage patriarchal: loss of privileged position hetero men had for centuries. Bringing gay marriage to trial had to publicize their private lives. Many religious groups trying to overturn the legalization of gay marriage. Minority against another minority (asian groups against) History of marriage complex (religious and material side), many diff cultures involved. Was originally to ensure bloodline (possession of the woman) Trying to group many perspectives into the term marriage . Peasants never married b/c had no estate or wealth to bring to the union. Seen as wanting to steal the word marriage from the straight community. Gays do it b/c they purely want to be married, whereas for straight ppl it is b/c of family (not same pressure on gays)- want rights etc to the family. Make commitments in a wider social context (no longer just b/w them)
