Started publishing in his late 20s and didn"t stop until his death. Particularly interested in the organic nature of any living thing. Philosophy departments at universities were mainly dominated by religion. Argued that there is one form of knowledge inquiry. In his late 20s he was publishing a lot about general philosophical inquiries. Known better as a public intellectual during the first half of the 20th century. Always a moderately left of center political view, early critic of the soviet union. Not happy with the state of democracy in the united states, but was an advocate for democracy. Most philosophically sophisticated advocate of progressive education.
