PSYB30H3 Chapter Notes - Chapter 13: Sensation Seeking
Document Summary
Resilience is the ability to recover from tragedy, adversity, hardship, or to adapt to ongoing life stressors. When a traumatic event happens humans have the capacity to maintain a psychological equilibrium and rebound to our former states of well-being. When a traumatic event hits a person they may not survive it or they may become crippled by the event. However there are people who recover (resilience) from the event or even achieve a better level of functioning (thriving) than before the event. Resilient people tend to be high in hardiness, trait resilient, and experience lots of positive emotions. Hardiness is related to better health, protection against burnout, greater activity in the elderly, better quality of life among those facing a serious illness, better performance, and greater immune response. Madi described transformational coping as people high in hardiness turning the stressful experience into something less threatening and ultimately even growth enhancing.
