Chapter 6: the politics of the rural and urban poor. In the countryside is where the worst aspects of political and economic underdevelopment prevails. Rural class structures: within the countryside, there are substantial disparities in land ownership, these inequalities have contributed to rural poverty and produced rigid class systems in countries. Include tenant farmers and wage labourers: these are the primary source of urban migration, urban class structure. National/comprador/state: petit-bourgeoisie/ middle class, traders, artisans, shopkeepers, professionals, civil servants. Peasants are neither conservative nor intrinsically radical: class inequality and politics, class inequality can be a major source of political grievance, however, there isn"t a clear relationship between inequality and protest or political mobilization. Instability of most post-colonial regimes: multiple coups attempts, insurgency, political disorder, civil conflict. Irregular transfers of political power outnumbered regular transfers of political power. *stability isn"t always desirable! (stable authoritarian government, stable economic stagnation etc. e. g. nazi regime) 2 major tasks (for countries emerging from colonial rule)
