Possibly quiz on pragmatics & semantics this week. Hw 9 due after prelim on mon 4/24. Children produce certain kinds of errors (but not others) All children go through similar stages of acquisition. Involves acquisition of a grammar (grammar = system of knowledge the speaker has) Acquisition of phonetics, phonology, morphology, syntax, semantics . One of the boxes does not have a ball on it. Researchers observe and record children"s spontaneous utterances, either by keeping a diary or through regular taping sessions. There are 3 people, experimenter, child, and a puppet. Experimenter asks the child to ask the puppet if the dog is smiling. Interested in child saying: is the dog smiling? . Humans are born with some knowledge of language. Rival hypothesis imitating parents and eventually extract generalizations. H1: (extreme one) children are born as blank slates and pick up knowledge from. H2: language is mostly built in and very little learning is involved in its acquisition.
