There is more to motivation than rewards and punishment; an intrinsic reward (i. e. mastery of a skill) can be more effective than an extrinsic one (i. e. candy) The reasons why we do something (i. e. intrinsic vs. extrinsic) and the way another person communicates expectations and instructions to us are important for effort, performance, and task persistence. Humanistic tradition emphasizes responsibility, growth and actualizing tendency; the individual is an active organism looking for the best way to grow and develop. Self-determination theory is grounded in humanistic tradition. Actualizing tendency the motive to actualize or bring about growth and positive change 8. When needs are all met, people are motivated and happy to participate in an activity. Marked by complete absorption, deep enjoyment, intense concentration, and almost an altered state, as all irrelevant stimuli is blocked and focus is entirely on the task at hand.
