Lost friends: newspaper articles written by slaves searching for family and friends in an attempt to reunite. African americans who were formerly slaves started new lives: searched for jobs, bought land, got married, advocated for literacy. Often relied on former servicemen or white northerners to found schools because they had wages and could read. Showed that they were concerned with defining freedom for themselves: tried to join politics. Signed by grant due to republican lobbying to allow the government to imprison kkk members. Established martial law which was effective though this was only used once. South is considered to have won this period.
