Mead"s theory of emergence of mind and self out of the social process of significant communication has become the foundation of the symbol interactionist school of sociology and social psychology. They" emerge only out of the social process of significant communication. Significant communication: gestures, mead defines gestures as movements by one party that serve to stimulate movements in another party, they are significant because they mean something, language is one the most important gestures. Arouse the same response in the person expressing them as the person being addressed. Language is linked to the process of thinking. Self realization allows one to take oneself as an object. To put oneself in the role of the other. The self emerges out of social process and is distinct from the mind which is biological. There is a dialectical relationship between self and mind.
