A state of solidarity that exists in tight knit traditional communities. Characterized by a strong sense of belonging to the group. According to durkheim, societies are based on pre-contractual agreements. The basis for these agreement(for example: moral norms) is shared emotional feeling. These shared feelings come about through social interaction. Shared emotions come out of social interactions in which people come together to pursue a common goal. They develop feelings about each other and about what is right and what is wrong. Society is a ritual order and a collective conscience is based on the rhythms of social interaction. Think about the many different ways that member of traditional, small scale communities came together to achieve common goals. Theoretical roots ---> k. mark (power) & t. parsons (social structure) The power elite --> military, economic, political elites. Capitalism: the proletariat (w) and the bourgeoise (capitalists- make money spend money)
