SOC221H5 Lecture Notes - Pilot Experiment, Structured Interview, Norm (Social)
Document Summary
Structured interview: an interview in which all respondents are asked exactly the same. Introduces possibility of human error when researcher involves researcher and participant questions in the same order with the aid of a formal interview schedule. (adapted from bryman, Bell, and teevan 2012: promotes standardization, reduces human error. Hard to keep track of information when interview schedule isn"t followed: misunderstanding on the part of the interviewee ( respondent ). Reduce chances of respondent not understanding the question (by testing out your question) Pilot study: smaller-scale version of the original research design, conducted among a sub-sample: biases caused by the ascribed (innate) characteristics of the interviewers and/or the respondents. Interview bias: ascribed characteristics having an effect on how the respondent answers a question. Race/gender of interviewee/interviewer can have an effect on the study. Nonreactive surveys (without contact between interviewer/interviewee); a nonreactive survey is a questionnaire.
