Non-material culture (symbols, language, values and beliefs, norms, ideal and real culture) Anything carrying particular meaning - recognized by people sharing culture. Meanings can vary:: cross culturally, within single society & over time. Language as key unlocking centuries of accumulated wisdom. People perceive world through cultural lens of language: our very understanding of the world is filtered by the languages we use. Values: culturally defined standards, judge and guide social living, broad principles: underlie beliefs. Beliefs: specific statements believed to be true, rely on value system to gain meaning. Folkways & mores: rules/expectations, guide behavior, varying qualities/degrees of punishment for violation. Norms for routine, casual interaction i. e. small things like not being properly dressed or not abiding the table manners.
