Document Summary

Role of creb/bdnf signaling in depression-like behavior is region-dependent. Adaptive changes in 5ht and ne neurotransmission. Treatment modalities for major depressive disorder: antidepressant drugs, electroconvulsive therapy (ect) too invasive, psychotherapy. For treatment-resistant depressive patients: antidepressants + atypical antipsychotics (e. g. , olanzapine, quetiapine, trancranial magnetic stimulation, deep brain stimulation. Pharmacologic treatment for major depressive disorder: antidepressant drugs. Mao inhibitors (e. g. phenelzine, tranylcypromine, pargyline, isocarboxacid) Agomelatine, a melatonin receptor agonist and 5ht2c antagonist. Most, if not all, clinically effective antidepressants inhibit reuptake of ne & 5-ht to varying degrees. Maoi: inhibit the enzyme critical for the metabolism of monoamine neurotransmitters increase synaptic availability of monoamines & facilitate monoaminergic neurotransmission is responsible for the therapeutic effects of antidepressant. Evidence against the acute effects of antidepressants mediate their therapeutic action. Antidepressants produce immediate increase in 5-ht/ne transmission, but their therapeutic action require weeks or months of treatment. Not all agents that facilitate 5-ht/ne transmission are effective antidepressants (e. g. cocaine)
