GEOL 2207 Lecture Notes - Rain Gauge, Advection, Reflectance
Document Summary
Movement of heat and humidity by wind. When some of the water vapour in air condenses, latent heat is converted into sensible heat => increasing air temperature. Latent heat is not released until there is condensation. Storms draw in humid air to condense and release heat into storm. Extra warming strengthens the storm to draw in more humid air: result: positive feedback, allowing storm to grow and intensify. Storm consume/condense so much water vapour that it results in precipitation. Storms contain more liquids and precipitation will reflect on microwave energy on radar: more intense storms = stronger echos (red/yellow) on radar. By rate of increase depth of water in rain gauge. Direct indication of average warming rate in the storm (latent heating) The sun heats the earth"s surface, which warms the air and evaporates water. This warm humid air is the fuel for storms, and can be advected into the storm by winds.
