ANTH 1131 Lecture Notes - Microblade Technology
Document Summary
Continuation of blade technology but on a much smaller scale. The blades are very small taken from a very small microblade core. Then the microblades would be retouched into microliths (specifically changing the shapes into trapezoid, crescent shapes) to be used as composite tools. Composite tools are used, for example, as a spear you would attach the microliths to the sides or tips of the spear, and replace them when they get dull. Other tools are generally biodegradable and wouldn"t survive. The non-lithic material used among modern hunter-gatherer societies: Containers and cordage are two important components in non-lithic materials. Clothing are important as well in colder regions (hides mostly) Prior to 40,000 years ago, very little record of using anything other than stones. Rare use of bone for making tools. Little evidence for preparation of animal hides (to make leather, for example) No evidence for basketry (mostly because they wouldn"t survive)
