Document Summary

Not going to be on the midterm. Context (study in the same place or in the classroom) Memories are held in storage by a web of associations. These associations are like anchors that help retrieve memory. Why can we remember song lyrics so well. Both music and lyrics can evoke emotions which help with memory. Spacing effect = given x number of minutes studied, you"re better off to study in more sessions than all at once (cramming is bad) Spend more time actively thinking about the material (over-learn it) Get plenty of rest, food, exercise (so your brain works) What many people do that does not work! Read text and highlight key parts, re-read focusing on highlighted information: studies show you don"t remember significantly more after re- reading a second time, better off taking practice tests (in book, on psych portal, with friends) Make flash cards: enforces fixed learning which is inflexible, recognition memory vs recall.
