Document Summary

Memory: need memory of facts to supplement you in understanding stories; enhance your knowledge: h. m was a man who had brain surgery to treat epilepsy. A problem happened and h. m became unable to remember anything that happened after the surgery. Without memory, h. m could not come to terms with his uncle"s death; he kept forgetting. Also, without his memory, he didn"t know his self". Wundt and titchener launched the new enterprise of research psychology (separating it from biology and philosophy). They believed that psychology is the study of conscious thoughts, and that can only be done with introspection (observe and record content of our own mental lives and sequence of our own experiences). Introspectors had to be trained to be unbiased. Introspection failed because memory also relies on the unconscious, which, by definition, introspection can"t reach. Data concerned with behaviour are observable and so, scientific. Recording these would eventually give you a person"s learning history.
