PSYCH 2AP3 Lecture Notes - Dissociative Identity Disorder, Dissociative Disorder, Psychogenic Amnesia
Document Summary
All of these disorders have dissociation in common: separation of some subset of mental elements from normal consciousness making them inaccessible to our normal consciousness. Alteration in ones sense of personal identity issue: main controversy is whether it actually exists or not conceptualized as adaptations, psychological processes designed to help us function in the world around us. Dissociative amnesia: not remembering part of the past. Dissociative fugue: forgets part of his or her past and then wanders off. All seem to recall the inability to recall certain events in one"s life such as severe trauma forget strongly negative emotions attached to certain situations. Nostalgia: look back on the past as a time of great joy. Not due to a substance, neurological or medical condition, or (in children) to imaginary playmates or fantasy play. Only 77 cases between 1791and 1962 around the world: extremely rare diagnosis. Three faces of eve (1957) thigpen & cleckley.
