PSYCH 2B03 Chapter Notes - Chapter 11: Terror Management Theory, Freudian Slip, Sibling Rivalry
Document Summary
Chapter 11: the workings of the unconscious mind defenses and slips. Defense mechanisms: techniques the ego uses to keep certain thoughts and impulses hidden in order to avoid anxiety. Freudian slips: provide important clues about the activities of the unconscious mind. Ego sometimes permits expression of prohibited thoughts and feelings on purpose by wit or humour. Generated by stresses from the outside world and conflicts within the mind. Id generates want, superego provides moral judgment, and ego tries to figure out the rational thing to do. Psychic conflict: happens when a mind battles itself resulting in conflict. Ego and superego use their energy to push the id"s impulse below the threshold of action as well as the threshold of awareness. People feel sexual attraction toward members of their own sex, and these homosexual feelings are pushed out of action and awareness by the ego on practical grounds and the superego on moral grounds.
