Social psychology: social cognition- the study of the way we perceive and evaluate others, making attributions, the way we form attitudes, social influence- studies the way people influence each other"s behaviors and attitudes, obedience, helping behavior, obedience. Agreeing to someone else"s command or request by obeying the authority figure. Factors that affect willingness to obey: social norm- not breaking an agreement, surveillance- teacher looking over, buffer- separates teacher from learner; fewer the buffers, less likely the obedience, responsibility- 93% fully obedient. Actor- delivers shock: importance of science- taken out of typical laboratory study, dropped 65%- Agreeing to someone else"s command or request. Compliance without pressure: foot in the door technique. People are more willing to comply with a larger request when they first agree to a smaller request: e. g. small request to drive to subway, then asking to be driven home, door in the face technique.
