Identity is the response we get from others from what we say and do. We need to become more conscious of our communication to gain more personal control over others" perceptions of our identity. See page 54 figure 3. 1 in text. Shouldn"t make assumptions because: we could have a cultural or personal bias against the subject, could get the wrong idea, etc. Conscious verbal communication: clarity - be clear about what you are saying, upward/ downward/ lateral communication - speak to everyone the same, inclusive/ exclusive messages , confirming/ disconfirming messages, supportive/ non-supportive messages, enhancing personal/ professional credibility. Workspace - don"t put up too many personal things. Don"t put things up that suggest you would rather be somewhere else. Clothing/ personal appearance - dress appropriately for the job you want.
