ENB205 : ENB273 - Timber Report.docx
Document Summary
I would like to present to you this report, containing the analysis of four timber samples; softwood, hardwood, chipboard and plywood, which are commonly used for construction purposes. The raw data was obtained through flexure testing, which was then manipulated through calculations to determine their density, moment of inertia, modulus of elasticity and modulus of rupture. The purpose of this report was to give an insight into the properties of typical timber materials, and to investigate the effects that defects have on these properties. Furthermore, this report discusses the applications of these timbers in construction. This report was conducted to give an insight into the mechanical properties of softwood, hardwood, chipboard and plywood (commonly used timbers), and to investigate how moisture levels and defects influence their structural characteristics. Flexure testing took place to determine the deflection of each sample at different loads, and the dimensions of each sample were collected.
