Document Summary

To understand personality, we need to understand what a person is like. We also need to understand our genetics and physiology, which gives us our physical being and building blocks of neurons, hormones, and brain structures that take in and process information and direct our responses to the world. We need to consider that there may be parts of the person hidden under the surface, much like how the ocean has tides and a myriad of creatures hidden in its depths. We also need to know how a person copes with the storms of life. A person is more than these things, more than the sum of his or her parts. Two early personality psychologists mused that there are aspects of personality that are. Universal to all people, that are shared by similar people, and that are completely unique to a single individual (kluckhohn & murray, 1948).
