Document Summary

First step is acquisition (gaining information and placing it into memory). Then, you go through the storage phase (hold it in memory until the information is needed). Finally, you go through retrieval (locate the information in the warehouse that is memory and you bring it to active use). Information processing: complex mental events (learning, remembering and deciding) involve a number of discrete steps, where the output of one step is the input to the next step. The model evolved and became the modal model (believes that information processing involves different kinds of memory). Sensory memory: holds onto input in raw form. Now, this theory is removed because it doesn"t tell us much: iconic for visual inputs, echoic for auditory inputs. Short-term memory: place you hold information while you"re working on it. This is now called working- memory to emphasize the function. It"s no longer a place, but a process. Long-term memory (ltm): larger and permanent storage area.
