SOCIOL 1A06 Lecture Notes - Lecture 2: Research, Participant Observation, Ethnocentrism
Document Summary
Secondary data analysis ( documentary analysis , historical sociology , use of official stats ) Qualitative: focus on process (how, why), giving voice to participants . Cross sectional: data taken at one point in time. Longitudinal: study done at more than one point in time. Replicating a positivist approach to research (not conducive to rapport building; subject rather than participant; treat them well; have them have an active role) Designing good questions is difficult (mutually exclusive, exhaustive categories) Data is limited to what is on paper. Incomplete data (might not have data that you want) Positive voice does not give voice to participants because the researcher thinks he knows everything. Ethnocentrism is about applying your one world view and negatively judging others who are different. Hawthorne effect is a limitation of experiments (idea of people change behaviour when being watching) Submit an ethics application, need to get approval. The researcher is able to identify person"s responses with that person.
