Mental illness that causes strange thinking, abnormal feelings and unusual behaviour. Phases of the disorder: prodromal, active and residual. Diagnosis requires more than 2 of the following (present for one month, as well as six months of some disturbance) Distortions in perception that do not have a basis in reality. Types of hallunications: auditory, visual, olfactory, gustatory, tactile. Types of delusions: persecutory, referential, religious, grandiose, bizarre. Thought disturbance that produces a conversational style. Agitation, hyperactivity, facial grimacing, repetitive hand movements. Distortions in: thought (delusions), perceptions (hallucinations), language and thought process (disorganised speech), self monitoring of behaviour (disorganized behaviour) Restrictions in: range and intensity of emotional expression, fluency and productivity of thought and speech, initiation of goal directed behaviour in 75% of cases, it occurs between 15 and 45 years of age. 1. 5% of population suffers from schizophrenia at some point. Boys = first psychotic break between 18 and 25 years of age.
