Can"t block impulse to indulge: escalation. More and more of the substance or activity is required to produce desired effects: negative consequences. Interfere with one"s day to day life, negative consequences such as legal consequences. Many behaviours are addictive, but most people who engage in them do not develop problems. Expanding view to other behaviours besides alcohol and drugs to things such as sex, food and shopping. No single cause of addiction: the individual environment and substance/behaviour combine, individuals with more trouble dealing with stress may be more susceptible to addiction, some people may also have a genetic predisposition to addiction.
