Document Summary

Roots: supply water + nutrients from the soil, anchor the plant. Embryotic root is known as the root radicle. 2 main root types based on structure. A) taproot 1 central main root. B) fibrous interwoven network of roots. Roots have impressive surface area and length. Parenchyma tissue: region of cell division mitotic growth. Cup shaped meristem with a central portion quiescent center. Increasing # of cells by mitosis: region of elongation. Cells are increasing gin length & there is some differentiation into different tissue types. This is due to 3 meristematic areas. C) vascular tissue procambium development of the xylem/phloem: region of maturation. Root hairs are produced from epidermal cells (trick blasts) 1 single rye plant 14 billion root hairs. Equivalent to the surface area of a football field. Tissue regions in the root (are some differences of dicots and monocots: epidermis, cortex main bulk of the root. Next layer endodermis which surrounds the vascular tissue.
