Dev2022 the heart and vasculature (lecture 10) The cardiovascular system is made up of the heart, which is the pump, and then the blood vessels. The oxygenated blood leaves the heart via the arteries and return to the heart via the veins. Pulmonary arteries are deoxygenated, and the pulmonary veins are oxygenated. We have deoxygenated blood coming from the inferior vena cava and from the superior vena cava into the right atrium down into the right ventricle up through the pulmonary artery to the lungs where it becomes oxygenated. Returns to the heart to the left atrium down to the left ventricle and out into the circulation via the aorta and goes up into the head and down into the body. At any one time, the majority of blood is within the veins. It pumps the blood, which circulates it out of the body. The heart can speed up and it can speed down.
