Transitioning from dictatorship to democracy: first of all society is made up of 3 parts (review from last class) Made up of millions of groups, clubs and individuals. Sometime groups ally together or oppose each other. In dictatorship they can increase the cost of oppression: but there is a point where the costs of maintain the regime outweighs the benefits ( can"t kill everyone, however, civil society cannot go beyond this. Thus they need to be organized in political society before it can do this. Alternatives to the regime, but they cannot put pressure on government. This is what dictatorships are trying to prevent from happening by using. This throws people in the arms of dictatorship. 2) nationalism: plays with politics to a certain extent, dictators say that they represent the nation, the common good and politicians represent the fat cats . Need to pay attention to 6 things.
