Lecture 2 nature of social work and concepts. Interested in assisting people in altering their lives/exploring peoples issues. Analyze families/members of a small group or individuals in common situations. Any individual or family/group is always part of a bigger group. Things that affect one part, affect all parts. Chance may not occur in the person/family but still affects them greatly. Imagery: ex. (calm, until rock hits water and causes rippled effect and spreads) Alters all parts of the system (interventions are often multiple and effects multiple parts of a system) Ex school environments these can become a part of the changes. Social systems (ex families) equilibrium can be negative (ex a role of individual misbehaving) Try to alter one piece, but it takes the whole system to adjust. Social worker has to be aware of the change and how it will affect the whole system.
