Professional consensus: first principles of health research and practice, health status can change over time. Look at the health of populations through a difference in individuals habits and environment: we can learn the causes of these health changes. Interpretation: we can use knowledge to change health status. Apply knowledge to change health status: measuring the burden of disease, mortality. Death rate per unit time, per demographic group, per cause, etc. Crude rate = # of deaths per unit time. Adjusted rates is another way to measure mortality, this is based on cause, age, etc. This is a simple way to measure death; problems include if the illness is non fatal and mortality rate doesn"t measure suffering: morbidity. How many people are sick: incidence. Proportion of new case over a period of time. Probability that a healthy person develops a disease during a period of time: prevalence. Proportion of individuals in a defined population with the disease at a particular time.
