PSYCH 3M03 Lecture Notes - Monogamy, Cuckold, Egg Cell
Document Summary
Psych 3m03: some species have a long courtship patterns, some mate often with little courtship. Pheromones, tactile stimuli, visual stimuli all input into sexual arousal. Sexual behaviour is largely innate once initiated, but can be modulated by learning: see sexual behaviour in infancy, at base of innate reflexes. Male: sperm are numerous, less required investment, effort may end at insemination; does not help to nurse (often in non-human mammals; sometimes in humans, multiple mating"s propagate genes. K-selected species small number of offspring; heavy investment, prolonged juvenile period. Bi-parental care is common but not universal; bi-parental care is better. Males vary more in reproductive success than do females. Evolutionary lag has caused birth control in human culture; voluntary nature of reproduction has never arose in evolution. Monogamy one male and one female: more dominant males lose reproductive potential, lower status males gain, female-female competition for dominant males, most common in human culture. Serial monogamy repeated partnerships of limited duration; sequential.
