3 theories to understanding human nature: maslow"s hierarchy of needs. 2 groups of human needs are defiency and growth. Levels of needs in pyramid (starting at bottom): 1. A good leader needs to know where a person is located on the pyramid in order to determine an effective motivator for that person/ employee: herzberg"s hygiene and motivation theory. Job satisfaction and job dissatisfaction act independently of each other. Strive to achieve hygiene needs satisfaction is only temporary. 2 sets of needs: basic survival needs and higher level physchological growth needs. Cannot use motivators until all hygiene factors are met: theory x and theory y. Motivated by things such as promotions: trait theory ( one-way influence) Leaders are born with certain traits that are suited to leadership. Depends on a range of situational factors. Appropriate fit between leadership style and situation factors. People/ employees are motivated by reward and punishment.
