Document Summary

A well-known phrase used to explain what appears personal and private and an individual person"s circumstances is shown to be shaped by institutional policies and ideologically based values that differ in time and space. Through out the course, we have learned that institutions and government policies shape private and personal experiences, situations and characteristics of a minority group or an individual in a society. One example that relates to this phrase involves women"s poverty. Society and gendered oppression have made women economically dependent on men, because they cant have access to the same job opportunities and equal wages as men. Then, the experience of high levels of poverty by women is the result of oppression and gender inequalities. This concept means that women in many industrialized west nations are more likely than men. There are many reasons why women"s impoverishment is complex, but one of the most important is the fact that the traditional gender ideology still exists.
